FAMI Current Projects
For the fiscal year beginning July 2002, FAMI has three firm projects. Several of these activities have slots for volunteers interested in giving back to the environment. Goliath Grouper Tracking In a continuation of last year’s work, we are seeking documentation of sightings of Goliath grouper. Please do not harass the fish, but if you can get close enough look for a tag between the two dorsal fins. Document the location of the fish, water depth, date, tag number if appropriate and a size estimate. The information can be e-mailed or called in to us at (850)872-8016. MPA Effectiveness In cooperation with scientists from FSU and the NMFS service FAMI will be providing a work platform for population work at the marine protected areas. Cruises range from 3-5 days contingent to weather. Work includes catching and tagging several species of fish. Artificial Reef Monitoring Using a grant from Florida’s FWCC we will be doing a complete look at the artificial reefs off Panama City. The goal is to establish a data base with up to date information on the location and condition of the existing artificial reefs off Bay County. Work will include locating, fish census and mapping. Plans call for training of a volunteer dive team that will continue the work after the grant. Divers must be certified with at least 25 open water dives, members of DAN; with DAN insurance and complete a mandatory week end training course.
